Adding a Referral to a Member’s Profile
There are three ways to add a referral to a member’s profile:
Option 1: Automatically through an Activity Flow
If your flow (script or assessment) includes questions where certain responses should trigger a referral, you can link a referral template to that answer.
Here’s how it works:
- A member answers a question in a way that flags a need (e.g., selects “Yes” to needing food support)
- Based on that answer, the referral template you’ve connected appears on the member’s profile automatically
- You or your team can then click “Send” to deliver the referral email or SMS
This setup is called an Answer Action and is configured inside the flow builder.
Option 2: Manually during an activity
To add a referral that isn’t triggered by a member response:
- Scroll to the bottom of the activity module.
- Select + Options.
From there, you have two choices:
- Use a template → Select an External Resource and Template from the dropdowns. The referral information will auto-fill.
- Create a one-off referral → Enter the details manually without using a template. (Note: one-off referrals require both a Title and a Description.)

Option 3: Manually from the Member Profile
You can also add a referral directly at any time.
- Go to the member’s profile
- Scroll to the Referrals section
- Click “+ Add Referral”
- Select the referral template you want to use, or enter the information for the one-off referral without a template
- For templates, choose to send it by email or, if your organization has it enabled, by SMS
- Click Send
This method gives you flexibility to add referrals outside of the activity flow, whenever needed.
